Homeschooling During the Holidays: Keeping the Focus on Christ, Family, and Learning

The holiday season is such a special time of year, full of joy, traditions, and togetherness. As homeschoolers, we have the unique opportunity to embrace this season while still keeping the learning going. It’s a time to reflect on the birth of Christ, enjoy the company of loved ones, and make the most of our time at home. But let’s be honest—it can also be a hectic and busy season! Between shopping, hosting, church events, and family gatherings, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lose track of your homeschool goals.

In this blog, I’m going to share some tips on how you can balance the busyness of the holidays while still focusing on Christ, keeping learning alive, and enjoying meaningful family time. Plus, I’ll introduce you to some of my favorite student-led writing activities with STEAM extensions that are perfect for freeing up your schedule while engaging your kids.

1. Keep the Focus on Christ

First and foremost, the holiday season offers a wonderful opportunity to shift our focus back to the true meaning of Christmas—the birth of Jesus. As homeschoolers, we can integrate Bible stories and reflections on Christ's love into our daily lessons. While bringing in advent calendar activities to switch up your morning routine is fun, even just doing work on the couch near a twinkle-light lit Christmas tree is enough to shift my mindset!

To make this even more meaningful, consider letting your kids lead the way, choosing a topic to teach the family (or a group of homeschool buddies). Giving them the chance to research and present on a topic like the origin of the word “Christmas”, where Christmas trees came from, or how old Jesus was by the time the Wise Men arrived with those gifts is beyond valuable. This also helps kids engage with the holiday’s true significance while keeping their minds active and curious.

2. Let Learning Be Festive and Fun

The holidays provide plenty of opportunities to add seasonal flair to your homeschool curriculum! Instead of putting the books away, think about how you can weave holiday themes into your regular subjects. For example, your children can write creative holiday-themed stories, practice math with Christmas shopping budgets, or explore the science of snow.

Set aside time each day to focus on family activities that draw everyone together. Whether it’s a cozy movie night, a board game marathon, or caroling in your neighborhood, these moments are just as valuable as any lesson.

5. Stay Flexible and Give Yourself Grace

Finally, it’s important to remember that homeschooling during the holidays doesn’t have to look perfect. It’s okay to take a break, simplify lessons, or skip a day if your family needs it. The beauty of homeschooling is its flexibility, and this season is a great time to embrace that.

Your kids will still learn plenty by helping with holiday preparations, reflecting on Christ’s love, and spending quality time with family. Focus on the things that matter most, and give yourself grace during this busy season.
