Why is Phonemic Awareness So Important?
Before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that words are made up of individual speech sounds, or phonemes. A child's skill in phonological and phonemic awareness is a good predictor of later reading success or difficulty.
This Beginning Sounds Matching Activity gives your child a chance to practice identifying the beginning sounds in words.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Students will enjoy using clothespin clips or dry erase markers to choose the correct answer for each card.
2. Students will look at the larger picture clue on the right side of each card.
3. They will then use a clothespin clip or dry erase markers to select the correct matching picture clue on the left side that begins with the same letter sound. Students will have 116 different cards to work through.
4. When students are done, they can lay them out on the center table or the floor for you to quickly look at and check in with them.
