Chicken Math Skip Counting is a digital download, printable, pdf file containing 3 math worksheets all in one, and a total of 7 pages.

The worksheets consist of counting groups of chickens by 2's, 3's, and 5's. Each worksheet shows pictures of groups of 2, 3, or 5 chickens and then several of those same groups per question. The student is then asked "How many groups of (two, three, or five) chickens are there?", "How many chickens are there total?", and "________X ________ = ________" .

The skill developed in this worksheet is called skip counting. Skip counting is considered an important developmental milestone and a necessary tool for understanding more advanced mathematical concepts, that additive thinking limits, such as fractions and proportional reasoning. Obviously, those mathematical skills come in time, but an early exposure to skip counting helps the mind to develop and visualize the construction and coordination of units. Skip counting exposes the child to a more concrete understanding of multiplication and what is happening with that.

To help your students with these worksheets, it is good to skip count with them, and then show them the pictures to make the concept clear.

The realistic pictures of chickens are a fun and delightful way that makes the transition from additive thinking to multiplicative thinking more delightful for the young student. What kid would not rather look at some cute chickens than a bunch of square boxes grouped together? My own children really like it when I pull out these worksheets. They sit together and look at the pictures and talk about the chickens before completing the problems. Chicken math skip counting is fun and is free.
