Non-Fiction Chapter Book Journal and Review
Non-Fiction Chapter Book Journal and Review
Non-fiction reading is a large part of learning! But sometimes it can be difficult to retain some of what is learned or share the knowledge if a book is read too quickly, there are words that are difficult to understand, or when there are questions that come up while reading but lost the moment the book is put down!
This journal and review packet is designed to help solve some of those problems and go above and beyond to enhance the experience of exploring the world of non-fiction reading.
From the very start, the student will put into practice choosing reading materials when deciding which non-fiction chapter book to write journal entries on before listing their reasoning as to why they made that choice! Throughout the whole packet there are places for the student to practice correct writing structure with titles and authors of books, names and dates, quotes and notes, opinions, etc.
There are fun graphics on the chapter journal pages to encourage categorizing information – whether it be questions had, words to look up, summarizing something learned, or any notes taken to remember an important detail. This will encourage the student to be inquisitive, enhance vocabulary, articulate thoughts, and build good habits of memorizing important details.
Parent/teacher and student will have plenty of opportunities to review together what is being read and learned throughout each chapter during the journaling process and with the final work of summarizing and reviewing the whole book. Working alongside a trusted adult and sharing what is learned builds confidence in exploring new and more difficult texts- which non-fiction can tend to be!
When the student has completed the reading and chapter journal entries, they will then do a final summary of the whole book, note their positive and negative opinions about it, and give an overall recommendation of the book to someone else (real or imaginary).
The final step will be for the student to put the whole journal together like a book, use some visual art techniques to design a cover based on their summary, and show it all off!
Many books can be read and journaled on with this resource for quite a few years during a student’s learning journey!
PS: There is a whole page giving parent/teacher directions on how to use this non-fiction chapter book journal and review with the student! There are even helpful connections written out on how this resource relates to various learning subjects!
I hope this resource blesses you! Of course, if you ever have any questions, comments, or criticisms I’d love to hear from you so I can grow in my educational resource design endeavors. Thanks so much for considering my work!
